The original day trading software that was used by the SOES bandits in the early 1990 is pretty much extinct now as market conditions have changed drastically. While that type of day trading software showed the best quoted prices from Nasdaq market makers, day traders were using this software to executed only sure-thing trades.

A “sure-thing” trade was buying a stock on the offer with one click of a mouse via the small order execution system that was available on this day trading software and immediately selling it on the bid at a higher price by using the small order execution system again.

Since the market was not very inefficient at the time, this day trading software made it possible to exploit such money making opportunities. Today, the markets have become much more efficient, so the role that day trading software plays as a part of a day trader’s overall trading arsenal has changed as well.
